What the heck is that?

,
This is the first edition of...What the heck is that?

As you stroll along Ocean Beach this summer browsing for seashells, you will probably see something that looks like a beetle. What the heck is that?

Some people call them Mermaids Purses because they look freakish and have a leathery feel to them. They are actually Skate egg sacs. Each sac holds a Skate embryo, which has probably hatched and is empty by the time you find it. What's a skate you ask? It is like a Ray, a bottom feeding fish found in the North Atlantic waters.

Mmmm... Donuts

,
The yummy goodness that is Donuts Plus opened for business today and the crew at Ocean Beach Rentals were among the first in line. Donuts Plus have been making donuts since 1952 and the building is a true landmark of Ocean Beach, Unit III.

A different view of Ocean Beach

Professional photographer Douglas Ljungkvist stopped in today. Besides being a genuinely nice person and an excellent photographer, Doug is a huge fan of Ocean Beach, NJ. Now based out of Brooklyn, NY, Doug is originally from Sweden. He used to vacation here when he was younger and cherishes those memories like so many of us do. One of Doug's specialities is photographing architecture. Much of his portfolio centers on architecture from his many travels including Sweden, Iceland, Mexico and much of Europe. But like a firefly to a light, Doug was drawn back to Ocean Beach. He likes the fact that so little has changed in Ocean Beach over the years. The grid style layout of the community, the various colors and shapes of the buildings, the sandy roads and lines of cottages; these are the things Doug had a calling to come back and photograph. Douglas talks about Ocean Beach with the same passion he does about his other extensive travels to exotic locations. I suggest you browse through some of Douglas's work which can be found on his website here: http://www.douglasljungkvist.com/ Under his projects tab on his website is a section dedicated to his photographs of Ocean Beach. I found it very interesting to see how Doug captured the colors and angles of Ocean Beach and really highlighted the charm of our cottages.
